How To Get Fit: Stretching
AM Fitness Lab: Is Stretching Really THAT Crucial?
Short answer? No. Long answer? It's complicated. Because it depends on the type of stretching we're talking about. Traditional, static stretching (like stationary lunges and calf stretches) done before a workout won't actually increase your range of motion. In fact, some studies suggest that stretching destabilizes muscles, making them less prepared for strenuous exercise - especially things like weight-lifting. However, a dynamic warm-up routine, that includes movements that stretch muscles and build heart-rate, will prepare your body for the calorific destruction you're about to put it through.
Using static stretching after your workout is more beneficial. Keep the warm-up routines pre-workout nice n' fluid. Okay?
